The ‘Dreaming Will’ Initiative

Celebrating an active partnership between the London Shakespeare Workout (LSW) Prison Project and Prisons Video Magazine the ‘Dreaming Will’ initiative seeks to further engage offenders, ex-offenders and professionals in the art of applied literacies (e.g., written, verbal, musical, numeric and visual) and in doing so, promote confidence through the Will to Dream for all, (a confidence crucial should any of the key skills specified above seek to flourish).

Since becoming a national registered charity on 26.01.01, the LSW Prison Project has been privileged to directly interface with 2,914 offenders in 113 Prison Projects in 43 different correctional centres, directly interacting with 364 Prison Officers and Education Staff members and 1,295 professional performers ranging from Fiona Shaw to Sir Jonathan Miller.  In 2002 alone LSW additionally produced two full theatrical programmes of original inmate writing presented at, amongst others, The Oxford Playhouse, The Royal Opera House and the Criterion Theatre.  LSW also maintains a full programme of professional and ex-offender incentives, the active participants of which are not represented in the figures (current to 31.12.02) quoted above.

Through the complimentary national distribution of its Prison Video Magazine for over the past 11 years, PVM has provided effective forums within which to share information, foster effective communication and debate issues that confront those living and working within UK prisons.  Chaired by Terry Waite, CBE, PVM has also recently undertaken projects for, among others, the Prisoners’ Learning and Skills Unit, Partners of Prisoners, the Trust for the Study of Adolescence and The Prisons Reform Trust.

Together LSW and PVM have embarked on a new adventure, the ‘Dreaming Will’ incentive, wherein offenders, ex-offenders and professionals are instructed in the practical skills involved in shooting and editing digital film.  Having made their own film, each ‘Dreaming Will’ participant shall work in a team alongside noted industry leaders, actively contributing towards the creation of an end-product incorporating original inmate writing and music as inspired by Shakespeare, such as is germane to contemporary institutional life.  These shall be distributed on a complimentary basis to correctional centres throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.  ‘Dreaming Will’ seeks to fulfil a national need through positive example.
